TOTALLY ADDICTED TO BASE

Our integrated unit is based around the books of Graeme Base.

Can books save the world?

Content Area: Literacy and Numeracy

VELS Level: Grades 3 & 4 (Level 3)

Duration: 3 weeks

VELS Standards for Literacy and Numeracy for Progression Points: 2.25, 2.50 & 2.75

In Literacy, students read and respond to an increasing range of imaginative texts and interpret the main themes. They make inferences from imaginative texts about plot and setting. They are able to use strategies to locate, select and record key information. They write texts containing several logically ordered paragraphs that express opinions and include ideas and information about familiar topics. They write narratives which include characters, setting and plot. They combine verbal and visual elements in the texts they produce. They can vary their speaking and listening and are able to project their voice adequately for an audience. They listen attentively to spoken texts and can identify the topic and retell information accurately.

In Numeracy, students use place value. They skip count forwards and backwards, from various starting points using multiples of 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 and 100. They compute with numbers using all four operations. They provide automatic recall of multiplication facts up to 10 × 10. They devise and use written methods for addition and subtraction up
to 999, multiplication by single digits and division by a single-digit divisor. They recognise directions of lines as vertical, horizontal or diagonal. They recognise angles are the result of rotation of lines and can produce simple tessellations. They recognise different types of data, understand number lines and are able to use a column or bar graph. They use lists, Venn diagrams and grids.

VELS Learning Focus for Literacy and Numeracy for Progression Points: 2.25, 2.50 & 2.75

In Literacy, students speak, listen, read and write with critical awareness using a growing variety of text types - chapter books, junior novels and poems. They explore characters’ qualities, motives and actions and understand how the choice of subject matter is influenced by context, the author’s purpose and the intended audience. They understand symbolic meanings and stereotypes. Students develop confidence in writing a range of imaginative and informative texts using simple narratives and descriptions. They plan and organize ideas prior to writing and adapt their writing to suit their audience and purpose. Students develop skills in listening attentively during class and group discussions asking clarifying questions, volunteering information and justifying opinions.

In Numeracy, students recognise and explore patterns in numbers and shapes. They recognise angles as parts of shapes and objects. They explore place value and order of numbers to tens of thousands. They skip count to create number patterns. They extend addition and subtraction computations to three digit numbers. They learn to multiply and divide by single digit numbers. Students investigate natural variability in chance events and order them from least likely to most likely. Students collect data to construct simple frequency graphs. They use simple two-way tables to sort non-numerical data. They use structured material (in tens, hundreds and thousands) to develop ideas about multiplication by replication and division by sharing. They learn to recognise practical applications of mathematics in daily life.
